Everyone knows that there are such things as puppy mills. They are these terrible places, where dogs are bred over and over gain, forced to give birth to puppies to then be sold. And every time I hear of these awful place, I end up tearing up. But I promise, this is no sad story. In fact, it has one of the happiest endings of all time…
A mill in North Carolina was just found and raided by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). There, they found a poodle, B.B. and were able to bring her to safety. But they could tell that she had been bred repeatedly, and she was super tiny. She had been damaged physically and emotionally.
“She was very tiny and she looked like this helpless creature,” said Jessica Lauginger, who is the animal crimes manager at HSUS.
B.B. was taken to an animal hospital, where she caught the attention of the receptionist, Brenda Tortoreo. She took one look at B.B. who was in a corner, scared to death, and thought to herself, “That’s the one I’m going to take home.”
“I put B.B. down on the floor, and she kept going in circles — not running, but walking. I guess that’s all she knew to do. She never knew what the sun was. She didn’t know what grass was, and she was terrified of it,” said Tortoreo.
But she began to get used to this new way of life. She began to run around, and she came out of her shell. She was acting like how a dog should. Tortoreo even calls her ‘my little princess.’
We are so thankful that she was saved from that horrible place, and we hope that she continues to improve, and come out of her shell!
